Genetic analysis of hog deer (Axis porcinus) in Victoria, Australia, and its applications to invasive species and game management

Abstract Hog deer were introduced to Australia in the 1860s, where they have spread across Gippsland region of Victoria. Due its status as an species and important game animal within Victoria, management is complex. Given this complexity, genetic studies can provide information regarding population structure diversity which assist controlling problematic populations hog deer, while also ensuring viable stock sites managed reserves. The aim study was investigate Victorian 150 years after introduction using short tandem repeats (STRs). samples collected 15 differing regimes Victoria genotyped for 13 polymorphic STR loci. Up four distinct clusters identified sampled, suggesting that despite low observed diversity, present their range. It possible detect evidence recent translocations among populations. This suggests presence may enable separate units, considering invasive objectives.
